Miele counts down the portions left before descaling and shows the number after each drink. When it reaches zero, drinks stop until the roughly 35-minute descaling program has run with two descaling tablets. The message is a maintenance step, not a failure. Miele coffee machine display What to do when Descale the appliance shows on the coffee machine ### Kind of code Mode, not a failure The machine is doing what it was set to do, not wearing out: a rinse that runs through the spouts at switch-on and switch-off, a descale or filter reminder counting the water that has passed through, an energy-save mode that darkens the screen after a quiet spell, or a demo mode left on from the showroom that lights the keys and pours nothing. No part is needed; finishing the cycle the display asks for, or a key sequence from the manual, ends it. ### Usually leads to No repair Confirm the message with OK and follow the instructions in the display. ### Shows up as What a Coffee Machine Error Code or Warning Symbol Means A coffee machine error code may show as a short string of letters and numbers, a flashing symbol for water, grounds or the brew unit, a short sentence on a text display, or a machine that stops with one light blinking. ### Make Miele Miele coffee systems are serviced at home, with the brew unit lifted out and inspected once the machine has cooled. ### Source Miele CVA 7440 built-in coffee system operating and installation instructions (en-US, CA) Miele CVA 7440 built-in coffee system (tank-fed, M.-Nr. 12 867 300). Each step comes from Miele's own guidance for Descale the appliance on its coffee machines. Follow it to the end: the last card says whether this is a visit. 01 Confirm the message with OK and follow the instructions in the display. 02 Fill the water container with lukewarm water to the descaling mark and add 2 Miele descaling tablets, then refit it and close the door. 03 When prompted, rinse the container well and refill with tap water; if the message returns right after a completed program, book a visit. ### Cleared? The message is gone, and the machine grinds, heats and pours a full cup again with no new part. If it comes back within the week, or the descale or filter reminder returns straight after a finished cycle, say so in the booking. ### What not to do This message does not mean the heater has failed. It also cannot be cleared by switching off, since Miele says no drinks can be made until descaling is done. ## What you may notice with it.
