# Coffee machine checks before booking: power, water, beans, trays and one test drink

These coffee machine checks before booking cover the outside of the machine only: power and the breaker, the tank or water valve, beans, the drip tray and grounds container, the door and a removable brew unit, then one test drink with notes. A breaker that trips again, water spreading toward an outlet, a burning smell or stray steam end the checks.

## At a glance.

A surprising share of service calls end with a tray pushed home or a setting changed back. A quarter of an hour at the front of the machine tells you whether you need anyone at all, and if you do, it hands the technician a head start.

### Time needed About fifteen minutes

Most of it is waiting for the machine to heat and making one drink.

### Tools None

A dry cloth, a flashlight and your phone's camera for the display.

### Most common find A tray or container not fully seated

The sensors behind them stop every drink until they close.

### Checks end at Tripping breaker, water near power, burning smell

Switch off at a dry breaker panel and book.

## What a few minutes of checks can settle

A fully automatic coffee machine is a set of sensors watching a set of containers. Water in the tank, beans in the hopper, a drip tray in place, a grounds container emptied, a door closed: if any one of them reads wrong, the machine refuses to brew, and from the outside a refusal looks exactly like a breakdown.

The checks below go in the order the machine itself goes through when you press a button. Work from the top, stop at the first thing you find, and try a drink after each fix.

## Power, the switch and the breaker

A dark display is not always a dead machine. Miele asks for its on button to be held for at least three seconds and lists a plug that has worked loose and a tripped breaker among the causes. Bosch's built-in has a separate power switch as well as the controls on the panel, and a clock showing 12:00 means it lost power and needs its settings entered again.

If the machine reports a voltage that is too high or too low, Bosch sends you to the power company and a qualified person to check the supply, not to the machine.

### A breaker that trips a second time

Reset a tripped breaker once, from a dry floor. If it trips again, leave it off and book: repeated tripping points to wiring or a heater inside the housing, and neither is an owner's job.

### Where the outlet of a built-in is

The plug of a built-in coffee system is usually behind the unit or in the next cabinet. Use the breaker instead of trying to reach the outlet, and never slide the machine out of its opening to get to it.

## Water, beans and the two trays

These are the sensors that stop drinks most often. Each check takes seconds, and each one is described in the maker's own troubleshooting pages.

- Tank: lift it out, check the float moves, fill with still cold water, push it home until it seats.
- Water valve on a plumbed unit: the shutoff under the sink fully open.
- Beans: hopper at least a third full, with no oily beans stuck to the walls above the grinder.
- Drip tray: emptied, wiped dry, pushed all the way in.
- Grounds container: emptied and pushed fully home behind the drip tray.
- Door: closed firmly on a built-in; Miele notes it will not close if a container is out of place.

### A tray message that stays after emptying

Miele traces an empty-the-drip-tray message on an empty tray to soiled contacts and asks for them to be cleaned and dried. Bosch adds a less obvious rule: empty the tray while the machine is switched on, or it does not register that you did, and take the tray out only a few seconds after the last drink. A little water under the tray on a Bosch is condensation and is normal.

## The door, the brew unit and the spout

On makes with a removable brew unit, switch the machine off, let it cool and take the unit out exactly as the manual shows. Rinse it, let it dry and refit it. Miele also asks for the silicone cap on its main dispenser connector to be greased at least once a month, because a dry cap makes the door hard to open and close.

Look at the spout while you are there. Dried coffee or milk on the outlet parts changes the flow long before anything inside the machine does.

## One test drink, and the notes that shorten a visit

Make a single plain coffee with a cup in place and stay beside it. Listen for the grinder, the brew unit moving and the pump, and watch the flow into the cup.

Then write down what you found. A technician who arrives knowing the model, the message and the sounds brings the right parts the first time.

- Model and serial number from the data plate.
- The exact wording or code on the display, with a photo.
- When it started and what changed that day: new beans, a descale, a power cut, a move.
- Tank or water line, and whether a water filter is fitted.
- Which drinks work and which do not.

## Signs that end the checks at once

Some findings are not a reason to keep going. Water spreading from the machine or its cabinet toward an outlet, a burning or hot electrical smell, a breaker that trips again, and steam or scalding water coming from anywhere other than the spouts all mean the same thing: switch the circuit off at the breaker from a dry spot, close the shutoff under the sink on a plumbed unit, keep clear and book.

## Where to stop

Stop and book if the breaker trips again, if water is spreading toward an outlet or into the cabinet, if you smell burning or hot wiring, or if steam escapes where it should not. Do not open the housing, do not reach past the brew-unit door while the machine is hot, and do not pull a built-in coffee system out of its cabinet to reach the plug or the water connection.

## Step by step.

Five steps, in the order worth doing them.

01

### Check power

Hold the on button, check the clock and reset a tripped breaker once from a dry floor.

02

### Seat the containers

Refill and reseat the tank, top up beans, empty and push home the drip tray and grounds container.

03

### Clean the brew unit

With the machine off and cool, remove and rinse a removable brew unit as the manual shows.

04

### Make one drink

Watch and listen through a single plain coffee.

05

### Write it down

Record the model, the message, the sounds and what changed, then book if it still fails.

For the heart of your home.

## Questions owners ask.

### Should I unplug the coffee machine before these checks?

Not for the tank, beans and trays, which the machine has to be on to recognize. Switch it off and let it cool before taking out a brew unit or cleaning inside the door.

### Does restarting the machine help?

Sometimes. Several makers ask for the machine to be switched off for a set time after an internal message, from two minutes to an hour on a Miele. If the same message comes straight back, note it and book.

### How do I know the drip tray sensor is the problem?

If the message stays with an empty, dry tray pushed fully home, and cleaning the contacts does not clear it, the sensor or its wiring is the next suspect, and that is a visit.

### What if the machine works after the checks?

Keep your notes anyway. A problem that returns within weeks, especially after the same trigger, is easier to trace with a record of when it happened before.

## When it needs a technician.

The repairs on the right are where this guide ends when the checks do not settle it.

### Coffee machine diagnostic visit

A visit that brews and froths with you watching, reads the machine's own counters, then tests grinder, brew unit, pump and heater until one part is named.

### Coffee machine control board repair

Testing and replacing the power board, control board and touch panel of a coffee machine, and the sensors they read.

### Coffee machine brew unit repair

Resealing, lubricating or replacing the brew unit that tamps the grounds and presses water through them, removable or fixed.

## More in troubleshooting.

The checks a coffee machine owner can make safely, from the power key and the water tank to the drip tray, the grounds container, the brew unit where the manual lets it out, and the model plate, and exactly where to stop and book.

Checks you can make from the front

### Reading the coffee machine display: reminders, container prompts and numbered codes

Most messages are requests, a few are reports. Why a prompt stays with the tank full, how long each maker wants you to wait before a restart, and when a code means booking.

Checks you can make from the front

### Find the coffee machine model plate behind the front door or under the base

Where the data plate sits on a built-in coffee system, a countertop bean-to-cup machine and a manual espresso machine, which numbers on it matter, and how to read a faded one.
