What the machine is telling you

# Common problems guides.

What a coffee machine means when the cup stays empty or runs thin and lukewarm, the grinder spins without beans, the milk will not foam, or the display keeps asking for something you already did.

## Common problems, guide by guide.

This section starts from the cup. The coffee has turned thin, the spouts give nothing but a hum, or the cappuccino arrives with warm milk and no foam. Each guide takes one of those results and works back through the machine, from the causes an owner can settle in a few minutes to the ones that need a technician.

### [Why the coffee comes out weak: strength, grind, scale and a clogged brew unit](https://coffeemachinerepair.center/guides/why-the-coffee-comes-out-weak/)

A pale, fast cup and a slow, thin one have different causes. How to read the stream and the crema, which settings to reset first, and when the grinder or brew unit needs a technician.

### [Why no coffee comes out: the tank, a choked grind and the spout connector](https://coffeemachinerepair.center/guides/why-no-coffee-comes-out/)

The grinder runs, the pump hums and the cup stays empty. Listen to which stage goes quiet, then check the water, the grind and the outlet before suspecting the brew unit.

### [Why the milk will not froth: warm milk, air leaks and dried milk in the frother](https://coffeemachinerepair.center/guides/why-the-milk-will-not-froth/)

Hot milk with no foam, or a frother that spits and hisses. Milk colder than 50°F, joints pushed fully home and a frother brushed clean solve most of it.

## What the machine is telling you.

A fully automatic coffee machine hides a long chain behind its front: water from a tank or a house line, a pump, a heater, a grinder, a brew unit that presses and releases the coffee, and a milk system with tubes thinner than a pencil. A weak link anywhere in that chain shows up in the cup, so the guides read the cup first and the parts second.

They are written for every kind of home machine we repair: a built-in coffee system set into a tall cabinet, whether it fills from a tank or from a water line, a countertop bean-to-cup machine, and a manual espresso machine with a portafilter and a steam wand. Where the answer changes with the kind of machine, the guide says which.

Each guide ends where an owner's part ends. Settings, beans, the tank, the trays, a removable brew unit and the milk parts are yours; the housing, the wiring, the water connection behind a built-in and anything past a hot brew-unit door are not. When a guide sends you to book, it says what to note first.

### The short answer Why the coffee comes out weak: strength, grind, scale and a clogged brew unit

A coffee machine making weak coffee is usually set to brew too little ground coffee for too much water, grinding too coarsely, or pulling from stale or oily beans.

### The short answer Why no coffee comes out: the tank, a choked grind and the spout connector

With no coffee coming out of the coffee machine, check the water first: a tank not clicked home, a stuck float, an unrinsed filter or, on a plumbed unit, a shutoff valve not fully open.

### The short answer Why the milk will not froth: warm milk, air leaks and dried milk in the frother

A coffee machine milk not frothing is most often dealing with milk that is too warm, a milk tube that draws air at a loose joint, or dried milk in the frother, the outlet or the air intake.

## Questions about common problems.

### Which of these problems usually turn out to be settings?

Weak coffee most often, followed by milk that will not foam because it was not cold enough. A strength or cup-size setting and a carton left on the counter explain a large share of both.

### Do these guides cover drip coffee makers?

Only in passing. The site is about machines that grind and brew on their own and about manual espresso machines; a filter coffee maker works differently and has few of the parts described here.

### The problem started right after a descaling run. Where should I look?

At whether the program finished, at the frother, which can collect loosened scale, and at the tank and filter you refitted afterward. The individual guides describe each check.

### Why do the guides keep mentioning the brew unit?

It is the part that meets the coffee on every cup, and coffee oil builds up on it. On many makes an owner can take it out and rinse it; on others it is fixed and relies on the cleaning cycle.

Split by what you are trying to find out rather than by which part of the appliance it concerns.
