Water, cabinet, power and filter

# Installation and setup guides.

Setting the water hardness and the filter for your water, connecting a plumbed coffee system to the supply, and fitting a built-in so its cabinet, rails, ventilation and power are right the first time.

## Installation and setup, guide by guide.

A good share of the coffee machine calls we see were set in motion on the day the machine was fitted. A hardness setting left at the factory value, a filter cartridge that was never registered, a supply line kinked behind a built-in, a cabinet closed tight so steam has nowhere to go: none of these is a failed part, and no part replaced will cure them.

How to read the strip in the box, convert a utility's milligrams per liter to the machine's scale, when a filter cartridge earns its place and which water never goes in the tank.

### [Fitting a Built-In Coffee System: Cutout, Airflow, Outlet and Height](https://coffeemachinerepair.center/guides/fitting-a-built-in-coffee-system/)

The cabinet decisions made before delivery: cutout and shelf, air in low and out high, a grounded 15-amp outlet within reach, a comfortable height, and what the installer does on the day.

## Water, cabinet, power and filter.

The guides in this section follow the order in which a new machine meets the house. First the water: how hard it is, what the machine needs to be told and whether a filter cartridge is worth fitting. Then, for plumbed models, the cold supply line and its shutoff valve. Then the tall cabinet: cutout, shelf, airflow, outlet and the height that makes the machine comfortable to use.

They describe the work the makers' installation manuals assign to a plumber, an electrician or the installer, so you know what should happen and what to ask for. They do not ask you to cut into a water line, add an outlet or slide a built-in in or out of its niche; those steps are for the trade.

Read them before a remodel is drawn, when a new machine is on order, after a move to a house with different water, or when a machine that behaved well for years starts asking for descaling far more often than it used to.

### The short answer Hard Water and the Coffee Machine Filter: Test Strip, Hardness Level, Cartridge

Coffee machine water hardness is set once, at first use, from the test strip in the box or your water utility's figure.

### The short answer Connecting a Plumbed Coffee System: Cold Line, Shutoff Valve and Pressure

A plumbed coffee system water connection is work for a qualified plumber or installer, done with the power off and the supply shut.

### The short answer Fitting a Built-In Coffee System: Cutout, Airflow, Outlet and Height

Built-in coffee system installation starts with the cabinet: a cutout to the manual's size, a full-width closed shelf when the machine sits above another appliance, ventilation openings the maker specifies and a grounded 120-volt outlet on a suitable circuit.

## Questions about installation and setup.

### What should I set on a new coffee machine before the first cup?

The water hardness, measured with the strip in the box or taken from your water utility, and the filter setting if you fit a cartridge. The machine uses both to decide when to ask for descaling.

### Can I connect a plumbed coffee system to the water line myself?

The makers assign the connection to a qualified plumber or installer. Your part is to plan where the shutoff valve will sit so it can be reached with the machine in place.

### What does a built-in coffee machine need from its cabinet?

A cutout to the manual's size, a solid shelf, air entering low and leaving high, and a grounded 120-volt outlet it can reach without an extension cord.

### The coffee machine was fitted recently and the shelf is damp. Is that normal?

No. Dampness after installation points to a supply joint, a pinched hose or condensation from poor airflow. Ask the installer to come back before the shelf swells.
