# Why the coffee comes out weak: strength, grind, scale and a clogged brew unit

A coffee machine making weak coffee is usually set to brew too little ground coffee for too much water, grinding too coarsely, or pulling from stale or oily beans. Scale in the water circuit and a brew unit clogged with coffee oil come next. Settings and cleaning are the owner's; a grinder that sounds wrong or a brew unit that will not come out is a visit.

## At a glance.

The cup fills, the crema looks pale and the first sip tastes of hot water with a rumor of coffee. Most of the time the machine is doing exactly what its settings tell it to, and the rest of the time the cause sits in the grinder, the scale or the brew unit.

### Most common cause Strength or amount of coffee set low

Miele's built-in brews between 6 and 14 grams of beans per cup, and the lower end tastes thin in a large mug.

### Fast flow, pale crema Grind too coarse

Move one step finer at a time and judge the second cup, not the first.

### Slow flow and still weak Scale or a clogged brew unit

Descaling and degreasing tablets come before any part is suspected.

### Stop point A grinder that grinds loudly or not at all

Foreign objects in the burrs are a job for a technician.

## What weak coffee looks like, and what each look points to

A coffee machine making weak coffee is rarely broken, and weak is not one symptom. The way the coffee leaves the spouts, the color of the crema and which drinks are affected narrow the cause down before you touch a single setting, so watch one full cup being made before changing anything.

Put a clear glass under the spouts if you have one. You want to see the speed of the stream, whether both spouts run evenly and whether the foam on top is a thin beige film or a firm, even layer.

### Coffee rushes out and the crema is pale

Water is passing through the coffee puck too easily. Miele's manual gives this exact picture for a grind that is too coarse and for an amount of coffee set too low: a quick flow and a pale, uneven crema. Both are settings, and both are yours to change.

### Coffee dribbles out and still tastes thin

A slow stream should give a strong, dark cup. When it gives a thin one instead, water is struggling through the machine rather than through the coffee, and scale or a brew unit blocked with oil is the likelier answer.

### Only one drink comes out weak

Each drink on most fully automatic machines keeps its own recipe. If the espresso is fine and the long coffee is not, the long drink's cup size or strength has drifted, often after a guest experimented with the menu.

## The settings that thin a cup with nothing broken

Start in the drink menu, because a setting costs nothing to fix. Miele describes a strength range of 6 to 14 grams of beans per cup and says plainly that more coffee gives a stronger cup; Bosch lists a strength set too low as the first cause of a weak drink. A cup volume that has been raised without raising the strength spreads the same dose through more water.

Check the brewing temperature too. A temperature set well below the machine's default extracts less, and some owners lower it after a bitter bag of beans and forget to set it back.

- Strength, aroma or amount of coffee for the drink you are making.
- Cup volume for that drink, compared with the cup you actually use.
- Brewing temperature, if the menu offers it.
- Pre-brew or aroma boost, which some makes let you switch off.
- A double-shot or two-cup option that splits one dose into two cups.

Close on the grind setting dial inside the bean hopper of a coffee machine, beans around it.

## Grind, beans and the chute for ground coffee

If the stream is fast and the crema pale with the strength already high, the grind is too coarse. Move it one setting finer and judge the second cup after the change: Miele notes that a new setting only shows after the second coffee, and JURA warns that its grinder may only be adjusted while it is running, or the adjuster can be damaged.

Beans matter as much as the setting. Old beans lose their crema, Bosch lists stale beans and an unsuitable coffee among the causes of a flat cup, and very oily dark roasts can cling to the walls of the hopper so the grinder turns with nothing falling into it.

### When you use the chute for pre-ground coffee

The chute takes one level scoop on a Miele and at most two level spoons on the Bosch built-in. Overfilling it does not make the cup stronger: the brew unit cannot press the excess, and some machines divert it to the grounds container. Damp ground coffee also sticks in the drawer; Bosch's answer is to take the drawer out, clean it and dry it before trying again.

## Scale and a brew unit clogged with coffee oil

Scale narrows the water path and upsets the flowmeter's count, so the machine delivers uneven amounts. Bosch ties strongly fluctuating coffee quality to limescale, and Miele adds longer heat-up times and a slow trickle to the same picture. A machine set to the wrong water hardness asks to be descaled too late, which is why the hardness setting belongs on this list.

Coffee oil is the other slow thief. Miele warns that the brew unit can block quickly with oily coffee and calls for its cleaning tablets to degrease it; on machines with a removable unit, rinsing it by hand and letting it dry is part of the owner's routine.

- Run the descaling program the display offers, all the way to the end.
- Test your water with the strip that came with the machine and set the hardness to match.
- Run a cleaning cycle with the maker's tablets.
- Rinse a removable brew unit under lukewarm water once the machine is off and cool.

## Built-in coffee system, countertop machine or manual espresso machine

The same causes show up differently depending on how the machine is built, and the order of checks shifts with it.

### A built-in coffee system in a tall cabinet

Everything an owner needs sits behind the front door: the tank or water connection, the bean hopper, the grind adjuster and, on many makes, the brew unit. On a plumbed unit, scale depends on the house supply, so a softener or a change of water source can shift the hardness setting you need.

### A countertop bean-to-cup machine

Some countertop brands keep the brew unit fixed inside, so degreasing depends entirely on the cleaning cycle. If that cycle has been skipped for months, run it before judging the grind.

### A manual espresso machine with a portafilter

Here the dose, the grind and the tamp are in your hands. A basket underfilled or a puck tamped unevenly lets water channel through one side, and the shot runs fast and pale even when the machine is perfectly healthy.

## Where to stop

Book a visit if the grinder turns with a hard rattle or grinding noise, if the display keeps asking for beans with a full hopper after you have tapped it and wiped it, or if the brew unit will not come out the way the manual shows. Do not open the housing to reach the burrs or the brew mechanism, and do not pull a built-in coffee system out of its cabinet to look behind it.

## Step by step.

Four steps, in the order worth doing them.

01

### Watch one cup

Note the speed of the stream, the crema color and whether both spouts run the same.

02

### Reset the recipe

Raise the strength or lower the cup volume for the weak drink, then try again.

03

### Go one step finer

Adjust the grind by one setting as the maker describes and judge the second cup.

04

### Descale and degrease

Run the descaling and cleaning programs, and set the water hardness to what the test strip shows.

For the heart of your home.

## Questions owners ask.

### Will a finer grind always make the coffee stronger?

Only up to a point. Too fine and the water cannot get through, the cup runs in drops and tastes bitter, and on some makes the machine stops the drink. Change one setting at a time.

### My coffee got weak right after I descaled. Why?

The first cups after a descaling cycle can taste thin while the circuit rinses through. If it lasts more than a few drinks, check that the descaling program actually finished and that no strength setting was reset.

### Does a water filter make the coffee weaker?

Not by itself. A new filter that was not rinsed as the maker describes can let air into the system and upset the amount of water, so rinse it the way the manual shows.

### Why is only the long coffee weak and not the espresso?

The long drink runs far more water through a similar dose. Raise its strength, lower its volume, or use a drink setting that brews two doses for a large cup.

## When it needs a technician.

The repairs on the right are where this guide ends when the checks do not settle it.

### Coffee machine grinder repair

Clearing and renewing the burr grinder: jammed beans, a stone between the burrs, worn burrs, and the motor and gearbox that turn them.

### Coffee machine brew unit repair

Resealing, lubricating or replacing the brew unit that tamps the grounds and presses water through them, removable or fixed.

### Coffee machine descaling service

A thorough descale of the water path and heater, a fresh filter, hardness set to match your water, and a message that clears.

## More in common problems.

What a coffee machine means when the cup stays empty or runs thin and lukewarm, the grinder spins without beans, the milk will not foam, or the display keeps asking for something you already did.

[The whole section](https://coffeemachinerepair.center/guides/common-problems/)

What the machine is telling you

### Why no coffee comes out: the tank, a choked grind and the spout connector

The grinder runs, the pump hums and the cup stays empty. Listen to which stage goes quiet, then check the water, the grind and the outlet before suspecting the brew unit.

What the machine is telling you

### Why the milk will not froth: warm milk, air leaks and dried milk in the frother

Hot milk with no foam, or a frother that spits and hisses. Milk colder than 50°F, joints pushed fully home and a frother brushed clean solve most of it.
