Start with the symptom

# Coffee machine problems, symptom first.

Every symptom we are called out for, traced to the causes that actually explain it — cheapest first. Start from what you are seeing rather than from what you think is broken.

## Needs a visit now

Four situations come ahead of every other page here, because what they put at risk is the person at the spouts and the cabinetry and wiring around the machine, not the morning cup. Water pooling under a countertop machine or seeping out of the cabinet below a built-in: stay out of the wet, switch the machine's breaker off only while you stand on a dry floor at the panel, and on a plumbed unit close the shutoff valve on its water line, usually under the sink or in the next cabinet. A smell of burning plastic or hot wiring means the breaker goes off at once and stays off. A breaker that trips each time the machine heats is left off rather than reset again and again. Steam or scalding water spraying from the side, the back or around the brew-unit door means step back, switch off with the power key or at the breaker, and let the machine cool for a good while; nobody reaches in to stop it. In every one of these cases the housing stays closed and a built-in stays in its cabinet until a technician arrives.

### [Coffee Machine Leaking Water Onto the Counter or Into the Cabinet](https://coffeemachinerepair.center/problems/coffee-machine-leaking-water/)

A coffee machine leaking water shows up as a puddle under a countertop espresso machine, damp wood in the tall cabinet below a built-in coffee system, or a trickle from behind the front that keeps coming after each cup.

Causes, cheapest first

1. A full tray or a tank set back crooked *no repair*
2. Cracked water tank or tray *lowest*
3. Hardened seals on the brew unit *low to moderate*

### [Burning or Hot Plastic Smell From a Coffee Machine](https://coffeemachinerepair.center/problems/coffee-machine-burning-smell/)

A coffee machine burning smell can be scorched milk on a frother, a sharp hot-plastic odor from the vents, or a smell of warm dust from a built-in's cabinet, and it may come right after brewing or while the machine sits idle.

Causes, cheapest first

1. Milk baked onto the frother *no repair*
2. Grinder motor straining on a jam *low to moderate*
3. Heater running without enough water *moderate*

### [Coffee Machine Tripping the Breaker or the GFCI Outlet](https://coffeemachinerepair.center/problems/coffee-machine-tripping-breaker/)

A coffee machine tripping breaker problem looks like the kitchen outlets going dead the moment the machine heats up, a GFCI outlet that clicks off during brewing, or a built-in that drops the circuit each morning at switch-on.

Causes, cheapest first

1. Too much on one kitchen circuit *no repair*
2. Moisture inside after a spill or leak *low to moderate*
3. Heating element leaking to ground *moderate*

### [Coffee Machine Spraying Steam or Scalding Water](https://coffeemachinerepair.center/problems/coffee-machine-spraying-steam/)

A coffee machine spraying steam may hiss from the milk spout, blow hot water out around a portafilter, or push a jet of vapor from behind the brew-unit door or the vents where no steam should be.

Causes, cheapest first

1. Portafilter not locked fully into the group *no repair*
2. A milk outlet clogged with dried milk *no repair*
3. Hard or cracked group gasket *low*

## Everything else we are called out for

Nothing on these pages puts anyone at risk. The shot may run thin or lukewarm, the grinder may whir without beans dropping, the milk may come out flat, or a descale reminder may refuse to go away, and an ordinary appointment handles all of it. Each page lists the checks worth making from the front of the machine, with the power key and the removable parts only, before anyone drives out.

[The repairs behind them](https://coffeemachinerepair.center/services/)

### Coffee Machine Not Turning On at All

A coffee machine not turning on stays dark when the power key is pressed, shows no light on the display, and makes none of the usual clicks, rinses or grinder sounds.

6 causes

### No Coffee Coming Out of the Coffee Machine

When there is no coffee coming out of the coffee machine, the grinder runs and the pump hums, but only a few drops or nothing at all reach the cup, or hot water flows while the coffee spout stays dry.

6 causes

### Coffee Machine Making Weak or Watery Coffee

A coffee machine making weak coffee pours a pale, thin cup with little crema, tastes sour or flat, and the used grounds come out soggy or crumbly instead of a firm puck.

6 causes

### Coffee From the Coffee Machine Not Hot Enough

A coffee machine coffee not hot problem means lukewarm espresso or long drinks, a cup that cools in moments, or coffee that used to come out hot and has drifted cooler over months.

6 causes

### Coffee Machine Grinder Not Working or Grinding Unevenly

A coffee machine grinder not working may stay silent, run with no beans coming through, grind with a harsh clatter, or ask for beans while the hopper is still full.

6 causes

### Coffee Machine Brew Unit Stuck or Will Not Come Out

A coffee machine brew unit stuck in place will not slide out for cleaning, will not go back in, or grinds and stops mid-cycle with a knocking sound and a message about the brew unit.

6 causes

### Coffee Machine Milk Not Frothing or Coming Out Flat

A coffee machine milk not frothing problem shows as flat, bubbly or thin milk, milk that sputters and stops, only steam from the milk spout, or no milk drawn up from the container at all.

6 causes

### Coffee Machine Descale Message Will Not Go Away

A coffee machine descale message that stays on the display after a full descaling cycle, comes back within days, or blocks drinks until the cycle is run keeps asking for care the owner believes was done.

6 causes

### Coffee Machine Not Detecting the Water Tank

A coffee machine not detecting water tank asks to fill or insert the tank when it is full and in place, flickers between full and empty, or runs a cup and then stops for water.

6 causes

### Loud Pump or Buzzing Noise From the Coffee Machine

A coffee machine loud pump noise is a harsh buzz or rattle during brewing, a pump that hums without water moving, or a new vibration that rattles the cups and the counter.

6 causes

### Coffee Machine Drip Tray Filling Up Too Fast

A coffee machine drip tray filling fast needs emptying after a few drinks, overflows onto the counter, or asks to be emptied while it still looks almost dry.

6 causes

### Coffee Machine Empty Grounds Message Will Not Clear

A coffee machine empty grounds message that stays after the container has been emptied, comes back after a few cups, or blocks drinks while the bin is half empty keeps the machine from brewing.

6 causes

### What a Coffee Machine Error Code or Warning Symbol Means

A coffee machine error code may show as a short string of letters and numbers, a flashing symbol for water, grounds or the brew unit, a short sentence on a text display, or a machine that stops with one light blinking.

7 causes

## Not every coffee machine breaks the same way.

A built-in coffee system sits flush in a tall cabinet with its water tank behind the front, a plumbed built-in draws from a line under the sink and never asks to be filled, a countertop bean-to-cup machine grinds and brews on the counter at one touch, and a manual espresso machine leaves the tamping and the portafilter to you. Which one makes your coffee?

[All coffee machine types](https://coffeemachinerepair.center/types/)

### Built-in coffee system

The coffee machine set flush into a tall kitchen cabinet, filled from a water tank behind its front, grinding beans and brewing each cup on its own before sliding out on rails for service.

### Plumbed coffee system

The built-in coffee machine connected to the house water supply, filling itself through an inlet valve and sometimes draining its rinse water to a line of its own, so nobody ever lifts out a tank.

### Countertop espresso machine

The fully automatic bean-to-cup machine that stands on the counter, grinding, tamping, brewing and frothing at the touch of a key, with its tank, hopper and grounds drawer all reached from the top and the front.

### Manual espresso machine

The home espresso machine with a portafilter you fill and lock in by hand, a pump and a boiler or thermoblock inside, and a steam wand for milk you froth yourself.

## The repairs behind the symptoms

Most people arrive knowing what they are seeing, not what is wrong. These are the jobs a visit usually turns out to be.

[All 10 repairs](https://coffeemachinerepair.center/services/)

diagnostic

### Coffee machine diagnostic visit

A visit that brews and froths with you watching, reads the machine's own counters, then tests grinder, brew unit, pump and heater until one part is named.

low to moderate

### Coffee machine brew unit repair

Resealing, lubricating or replacing the brew unit that tamps the grounds and presses water through them, removable or fixed.

moderate

### Coffee machine grinder repair

Clearing and renewing the burr grinder: jammed beans, a stone between the burrs, worn burrs, and the motor and gearbox that turn them.

moderate

### Coffee machine pump repair

Testing and replacing the pump that drives water through the coffee, with the flowmeter that counts each cup and the valves beside it.

moderate to highest

### Coffee machine heater repair

Diagnosing and replacing the thermoblock or boiler that heats water for coffee and steam, with its sensor and thermal cutout.

low to moderate

### Coffee machine milk system repair

Restoring the froth: the milk tube, the frother, the air inlet, the milk valve and the cleaning cycle that keeps them clear.

lowest

### Coffee machine descaling service

A thorough descale of the water path and heater, a fresh filter, hardness set to match your water, and a message that clears.

low to moderate

### Coffee machine water line repair

The water side: the inlet valve, supply line and drain hose of a plumbed built-in, or the tank valve and level sensor.

moderate to highest

### Coffee machine control board repair

Testing and replacing the power board, control board and touch panel of a coffee machine, and the sensors they read.

low

### Coffee machine seal and leak repair

Finding where water or steam escapes inside a coffee machine and renewing the O-rings, gaskets and hose clips that should hold it.

For the heart of your home.

## Questions about the problems.

### My coffee machine trouble is missing from this list. Is booking still possible?

Yes. The pages here cover what owners report most often; any other complaint books the same way. Add a line in the notes about the sound, the taste, the message or the puddle and we take it from there.

### The grinder is loud and the coffee is weak too. Which page do I read?

Start with whatever you noticed first. Burrs that are worn or jammed with an oily bean often grind coarse and noisy for weeks before the cup turns thin, and the earliest sign usually sits closest to the part that failed. Each page ends with links to the problems that travel with it.

### Which coffee machine problems cannot wait for a regular slot?

Four of them: water spreading from the machine or its cabinet toward an outlet or into the woodwork, a burning or hot electrical smell, a breaker that trips as the machine heats, and steam or scalding water spraying from somewhere other than a spout. Each problem page shows its own urgency; a weak cup, a quiet grinder or a stubborn reminder can wait for the booked day.

### Can I keep using the coffee machine until the technician comes?

For most problems, yes, with care. A thin shot, flat milk or a slow grinder does no harm, though pouring many drinks through a machine that is short of water can wear the pump, so stop if it grinds and hums with nothing in the cup. After a leak toward power, spraying steam, a burning smell or a tripped breaker, keep it switched off until we have seen it.
