Before any coffee machine reaches its board, power passes through several simple things an owner can see: the breaker, a GFCI outlet somewhere on the kitchen circuit, the plug, and on many countertop machines a main switch on the back or the side that is separate from the power key on the front. Built-ins add a cabinet connection behind the unit and sometimes a switch in a neighboring cabinet. Inside, the heater carries a thermal cutout that opens for good if the machine once ran dry or overheated, and that cutout takes everything down with it. After that come the power supply on the board and the display itself, which can fail while the rest still works. A machine that clicks or warms but shows nothing is a different case from one that is fully dead, and noticing which it is saves a lot of time on the visit.
