A manual espresso machine leaves the grinding and tamping to you and does the rest. You dose ground coffee into a basket, press it with a tamper, lock the portafilter into the group head and press a key or turn a knob. A pump draws water from the tank, a thermoblock or a small boiler brings it to brewing heat, and it passes through a shower screen and a group gasket into the basket. A steam wand beside the group froths milk; on single-heater machines the owner switches between brew and steam, waiting while the heater climbs. Some models have a grinder built in above the group, with the same burrs a bean-to-cup machine uses. The parts that wear are simple and familiar: the group gasket goes hard and leaks around the portafilter, the shower screen clogs, the steam wand tip blocks with milk, scale gathers in the heater and the solenoid or three-way valve, and the pump grows loud. Because owners handle hot metal every day, a lot of trouble shows up as water or steam in the wrong place, which is where safety comes first. What fails on a manual espresso machine How to tell 01 You lock a handled portafilter with a basket of ground coffee into the machine for every shot. 02 A steam wand on one side froths milk in a pitcher you hold, rather than a tube drawing from a jug. 03 The machine has no brew unit and no grounds drawer: you knock the used puck out yourself. 04 A dial or a pair of lights tells you when the heater is ready, and some models show a small pressure gauge. The problems it shows ### Group gasket and shower screen Heat hardens the rubber gasket that seals the portafilter to the group. Water then escapes around the handle, the shot runs thin, and the screen above it collects old coffee that slows the flow. ### Steam wand and its valve Milk sucked back into a wand that was not purged dries inside the tip. Steam weakens, spits or stops, and the valve behind the knob can begin to drip when it is closed. ### Heater scale and the thermostat A thermoblock or small boiler loses heat transfer as scale builds, and its thermostat or safety cutout begins to trip. Shots come out cool, and steam takes minutes longer to arrive. ### Pump and the release valve The vibration pump gets louder as it ages or runs against a blocked screen. A sticking release valve leaves water in the basket after the shot, so the puck is soupy when you knock it out. ## Getting at it, and whether to. The case, the heater, the pump and the valves are behind panels the technician opens, since the mains wiring runs close to hot parts. 2. If steam or scalding water sprays from the group or the wand, step back, switch the machine off at the plug or the breaker, and let it cool; never reach in to close a knob while it hisses. 3. Bring the portafilter and your usual basket to the counter for the visit, since the gasket is judged with the handle you use every day. Repair or replace A manual espresso machine is simple enough that most repairs are small: a group gasket, a shower screen, a steam tip, a descale or a pump are all modest next to a new machine. A heater and a board together on a lightly built model can reach the price of a replacement, and then the technician shows you both sums before any part is ordered. The gasket that seals the portafilter against the group head has usually gone hard, or coffee grounds are stuck along its edge. Wipe the rim of the basket and the gasket with the machine cool; if it still leaks, the gasket is replaced, which is a short job. ### My espresso machine's steam wand barely hisses. Can I clear it myself? With the machine off and cold, unscrew the tip if your model allows it and soak it in warm water, then clear the holes with the pin the maker supplies. Never poke the wand while it is hot or pressurized. If steam stays weak after cleaning, the heater or the steam valve needs a look. ### How long should my manual espresso machine take to be ready? It depends on the heater: a thermoblock is ready in well under a minute, a small boiler takes a few minutes. A machine that now takes noticeably longer than it used to, or never shows ready, is often scaled or has a tired thermostat. ### Do you repair espresso machines that grind their own beans? Yes.
