A plumbed coffee system looks like any built-in coffee machine from the kitchen, but behind it a small flexible line runs from a shutoff under the sink or in the next cabinet to an inlet valve on the chassis. The valve opens when the machine asks for water and fills a small internal reservoir or feeds the pump directly, depending on the make. Some models also carry a drain hose that sends rinse water from the drip tray to the sink trap, which means the tray fills more slowly. Inside, the parts are the same as on a tank-fed built-in: burr grinder, brew unit, pump and flowmeter, thermoblock or boiler, a milk system and the board with its display. What changes is the water side. Line pressure, a water filter cartridge in the line or in the machine, a pressure reducer and the solenoid valve all become part of the diagnosis, and a leak here does not stop when a tank runs dry. That is why a plumbed unit needs its shutoff found before anything else, and why the rails and the hoses are checked together whenever it comes forward. What fails on a plumbed coffee system How to tell 01 The coffee machine never asks you to fill a tank, and there is no tank to lift out behind its front. 02 A shutoff valve and a thin braided or plastic line under the sink or in a neighboring cabinet lead toward the column. 03 The drip tray may seldom need emptying, because a drain hose carries rinse water away to the sink. 04 The manual or the service menu mentions water hardness for the line, a filter in the supply, or a fixed water connection. On a plumbed coffee system: the inlet solenoid valve, supply line and its fittings, drain hose and tray level switch, pressure and the flowmeter. The problems it shows ### The inlet solenoid valve The valve that opens to let house water in has a small screen and a rubber diaphragm. Grit clogs the screen and the machine reports no water; a tired diaphragm lets it weep or keep filling after the machine has had enough. ### Supply line and its fittings The line flexes every time the machine rides out on its rails. After enough trips a fitting loosens or the line kinks behind the chassis, and a slow drip spreads across the cabinet floor where no one looks. ### Drain hose and tray level switch Where rinse water is piped away, coffee oils and grounds narrow the hose. The tray then fills, its level switch trips a message, and the owner empties a tray that was never meant to need it. ### Pressure and the flowmeter House pressure that swings high or low confuses the flowmeter that counts each shot. Cups come out short or overfilled, and the machine may stop partway with a message about water flow. ## Getting at it, and whether to. The first stop on any visit is the shutoff for the coffee machine's line, so please find it under the sink or in the next cabinet before we arrive if you can. The supply line and any drain hose are reached only once the chassis is drawn forward on its rails, which the technician does with the water closed and the power off. 2. If water is spreading from the column, close that shutoff and switch off the breaker from a dry panel; please do not pull the machine out of its cabinet to look for the leak. 3. Tell us whether a filter cartridge or a softener sits on the line, and when it was last changed, since it decides how much scale the machine has seen. Repair or replace A plumbed coffee system is almost always repaired rather than replaced: the cabinet, the trim and the water connection were set up for it, and the parts that fail most on the water side, a valve, a fitting, a hose or a filter, are small next to a new machine. A pump, a grinder or a board is still usually worth fitting on a machine that brews well otherwise. Yes. The house supply carries the same minerals as the water you would pour into a tank, and often more. A filter on the line slows the scale down; it does not stop it. The machine counts the water it has used and asks for a descale cycle when its setting for your water hardness says it is due. ### Why does my plumbed coffee machine say there is no water when the line is open? The usual reasons are a clogged screen at the inlet valve, a filter cartridge that has run out, a kinked line behind the chassis or a valve coil that no longer opens. Check that the shutoff is fully open; beyond that, the valve and line are tested on the visit with the machine drawn forward. ### Can a plumbed coffee system be switched to tank use? Some makes offer a version of the same model with a tank, but converting an installed plumbed unit is rarely practical: the chassis, the valve and the software differ. When a line cannot be kept, the technician explains what the maker allows for your model. ### Should the water to the coffee machine be closed when we go away? It is a sensible habit for a long trip.
