No Coffee Coming Out of the Coffee Machine

When there is no coffee coming out of the coffee machine, the grinder runs and the pump hums, but only a few drops or nothing at all reach the cup, or hot water flows while the coffee spout stays dry.

What it
usually means.

For coffee to reach the cup, three things must line up: water from the tank or the house line, pressure from the pump, and a path through the ground coffee in the brew unit to the spouts. Blocking any one of them leaves the cup empty. The commonest cause is on the owner's side: beans ground too fine or dosed too heavily form a puck that water cannot pass, and very oily dark roasts glue the grinder chute and the spouts shut. A tank that is not quite seated, a new water filter fitted with air still in it, or on a plumbed unit a supply valve left half closed after other work under the sink starve the pump. Scale narrows the fine passages of the thermoblock and the brew valve. Past those, the pump itself can wear, or the brew unit can fail to close. Because water flows freely through a hot-water spout but not through coffee, comparing the two narrows the search quickly.

The 6 causes, cheapest first

Answer these first

01

Does hot water come out of the hot-water outlet while coffee does not?

02

Does the grinder run and do grounds land in the container after each attempt?

03

Was the grind setting, the bean type or the water filter changed recently?

04

On a plumbed unit, was anyone working under the sink or on the supply line?

05

When was the machine last descaled, and does it show a descale or filter message?

Check these
before you book.

No coffee coming out of the coffee machine: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.

01

Run the hot-water outlet: if water flows there, the supply and the pump are working and the coffee path is blocked.

02

Set the grinder one or two steps coarser, switch to a less oily bean, and clean the coffee spouts.

03

Take the tank out, refill it and push it back until it clicks; prime a new filter as the manual shows.

Also worth checking

  • On a plumbed unit, open the shutoff under the sink all the way.
  • On a model with a removable brew unit, rinse it under cool tap water only when the machine is off and cool; leave a fixed brew unit alone.

How soon does it need a visit?

No coffee is an annoyance, not a hazard. Book a visit if the hot-water outlet is also dry, if the pump hums loudly without flow, or if the steps above bring back only a trickle.

The causes,

6 things no coffee coming out of the coffee machine turns out to be, from grind too fine or beans too oily to worn pump or flowmeter.

The cost guide
  1. 01 no repair

Grind too fine or beans too oily

A very fine setting or glossy dark beans pack the brew chamber and clog the chute and spouts. A coarser setting, a medium roast and a cleaned spout restore the flow.

  2. 02 no repair

Tank not seated or filter full of air

A tank sitting high cannot open its valve, and a newly fitted filter holds air until it is rinsed as the manual describes. Reseating and priming fix both.

  3. 03 no repair

Supply valve half closed on a plumbed unit

A valve under the sink left partly closed feeds too little water, and the machine stops mid-cup. Opening it fully is the owner's first check.

  4. 04 low to moderate

Scale in the heater and brew valve

Hard water and a skipped filter narrow the passages until only drops get through. A professional descale reaches what a household cycle does not.

  5. 05 moderate

Brew unit not closing or its piston stuck

A dirty or worn brew unit that cannot press the grounds or close its chamber lets water bypass or stop. It is cleaned, lubricated or replaced.

  6. 06 moderate

    Worn pump or flowmeter

A pump that hums without pressure, or a flowmeter that no longer reports water moving, halts the cup. Both are measured on a visit.

Questions about
no coffee coming out of the coffee machine.

The grinder runs but no coffee comes out. Where does the coffee go?
The grounds are brewed but water cannot pass them, so they land in the container as a wet puck. A finer grind than the machine can push through is the usual reason.
Can oily beans stop a coffee machine from brewing?
Yes. Glossy dark roasts leave a film that clogs the grinder chute and the spouts over time. Makers of bean-to-cup machines recommend beans with a dry surface.
Why did the built-in coffee system stop after the plumber visited?
A supply valve left partly closed, or air let into the line, starves the pump. Open the valve fully and run the hot-water outlet to purge the air.
Does descaling fix a coffee machine that only drips?
Often, when scale is the cause. If a full descale changes nothing, the brew unit or the pump is next.
