What the coffee machine pump repair
involves.

Every espresso-style coffee machine depends on a pump to push water through a tightly packed puck. In home machines it is usually a small vibration pump, a coil that shuttles a piston back and forth dozens of times a second; a few built-ins use a quieter rotary or gear pump. Between the tank or the inlet valve and the pump sits a flowmeter, a little impeller with a magnet that tells the board how much water has passed so each cup stops at the right level. After the pump come a check valve and the heater. A pump that has run dry, or pushed for years against scale, grows loud, delivers less, and in the end hums without moving water. The flowmeter can clog with scale or a flake of filter resin, so the machine stops a cup early or reports a water flow problem even though the pump is fine. Old silicone hoses stiffen and crack at their clips. The technician primes the system, checks the flow at the brew unit and at the hot water spout, tests the pump coil and the flowmeter signal, clears or replaces the valves, and fits a new pump where the old one is worn, then measures the flow again.

How the visit goes

Coffee machine pump repair,
step by step.

Prime, brew and dispense hot water again, showing you a steady pour and cups that stop at the right level.

01

Listen to the pump while brewing and dispensing hot water, and time how long a set amount of water takes to arrive.

02

Check the tank valve or the inlet on a plumbed unit, the filter cartridge, and whether the system has lost its prime.

03

With the coffee machine off and cool, open the case and test the pump coil, the flowmeter signal and the check valves.

04

Replace the pump, the flowmeter, a sticking valve or cracked hoses and clips, and descale the path if it is scaled.

05

Prime, brew and dispense hot water again, showing you a steady pour and cups that stop at the right level.

Loud Pump or Buzzing Noise From the Coffee Machine

6 causes, cheapest first

Before you call

Tell us this when you book

  1. Whether the pump sounds louder, rattles, hums without water, or has gone quiet
  2. Whether cups stop short, overfill, or the machine reports no water or a flow problem
  3. Whether the tank ran dry recently or the machine sat unused for weeks
  4. Whether the machine is tank-fed or on a water line, and the maker and model

It also answers

Moderate,
on the site's scale.

A clogged flowmeter or a sticking check valve is the modest part of this row. A new pump, fitted with fresh hoses and clips, and a descale of the path it pushed against, makes up the fuller job.

All service areas

Tampa BayFL · 31 areas

A coffee machine that sat through a Tampa Bay hurricane outage with water in its tank can come back with a pump that hums and moves nothing, often an airlock or a stuck check valve; the repair primes it, frees the valve or replaces the pump.

OrlandoFL · 30 areas

Orlando's hard aquifer water leaves scale in a pump's check valve and flowmeter until coffee slows to drips and the machine reports no water; the repair descales the circuit and replaces the pump if its pressure stays low.

Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas

A South Florida built-in that ran on a nearly empty tank through a busy season can wear its pump dry, and a loud rattle during brewing is that pump straining; the repair measures pressure and flow and replaces the pump or its valve.

New York MetroNY · 75 areas

In a New York prewar apartment the voltage sags when the building's air conditioners run through a heat wave, and a coffee machine's pump may buzz and struggle on those afternoons; the repair tests the pump and the supply before replacing parts.

HoustonTX · 36 areas

Houston's long summer outages end with voltage spikes that can burn a pump's coil, and a machine that lights up but moves no water afterward is tested at the pump and at the board before either one is replaced.

ChicagoIL · 50 areas

A coffee machine brought in from a car or a cold garage in a Chicagoland winter can freeze water in its pump and hoses; a pump cracked that way leaks under the machine, and the repair replaces it and checks every hose it feeds.

Los AngelesCA · 95 areas

Hard water in Los Angeles scales the flowmeter that counts the water for each cup, and the machine then brews short or reports a flow error; the repair descales or replaces the flowmeter and tests the pump's pressure.

San DiegoCA · 31 areas

Scale from San Diego's hard water builds at the pump's outlet and in the lines past it, and a machine that brews slower every month is working against it; the repair clears the lines and replaces the pump when its pressure no longer comes up.

San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas

A Bay Area espresso machine that rattles loudly after a small quake nudged it across the counter may have its pump loose on its mounts; the repair reseats the pump on new dampers and checks its hoses for strain.

Questions about
the coffee machine pump repair.

Is it normal for a coffee machine pump to be loud?
A vibration pump always buzzes while it works, and the buzz is loudest just before water arrives. A pump that has grown much louder than before, rattles, or keeps buzzing with no water coming out is working against air, scale or a worn part, and is worth a look before it stops.
My coffee machine ran with an empty tank. Did I break the pump?
Usually not from one short run. Refill the tank, seat it firmly and dispense some hot water to let the machine prime itself. If the pump stays loud or nothing comes through after a couple of tries, switch it off and book a visit rather than running it dry again.
Why do my cups stop filling halfway?
The machine stops a cup when its flowmeter has counted enough water. A flowmeter clogged with scale counts wrong, and a weak pump or a scaled heater can make the machine give up early. A descale sometimes cures it; if not, the flowmeter and the pump are tested.
