Miele coffee machines,
specifically.

Miele makes coffee machines in three forms for US kitchens: built-in coffee systems filled from a water container behind the door, the CVA 7775 that adds a DirectWater house connection, and CoffeeSelect countertop models such as the CM 7750. All of them grind whole beans and press the coffee in a brew unit you can lift out, so many visits begin with that unit and the prompts on the display.

The Miele lineup

What is particular
to Miele.

The CVA 7440 is a tank-fed built-in coffee system for a tall cabinet, the CVA 7775 adds DirectWater with three bean containers, and the CM 7750 CoffeeSelect is the countertop model. We note which one you have, because a plumbed unit brings its supply line and shutoff into the visit.

A brew unit that comes out by hand

Behind the door of a Miele built-in sits a brew unit you can remove and rinse under the tap. Its drive has to be in the start position before it slides back in, and Miele's reset for a stuck unit is to close the door and switch off for about a minute so the drive can find home again.

A sensor that looks for the rim of your cup

The central spout of the CVA 7440 carries a cup-rim sensor that moves the spout down to meet the cup. A knock while the spout rises throws it out of position and brings up F233, and a very wide mug the sensor cannot touch ends the pour early.

Descaling is counted down, then enforced

After each drink the display shows how many portions remain before descaling is due. At zero the machine locks until the roughly 35-minute program has run, which is why a skipped reminder turns into a machine that makes nothing.

Oils in the brew unit have their own program

Miele asks for the brew unit to be degreased with a cleaning tablet, and prompts after 200 portions. Oily dark roasts clog its filters sooner, and slow, lukewarm coffee is often that residue rather than a heater problem.

Parts

Milk valves, cup-rim sensors, drip trays and brew units are the parts owners handle, and they are specific to each Miele series. Grinders, pumps and boards for a built-in are ordered by the model and serial number on the machine's plate.

Repair or replace

A Miele built-in is fitted into cabinetry that was cut for it, so repair is usually the first choice while parts are listed for the model. Replacement becomes the question when an older built-in needs a board or grinder that is no longer supplied.

Questions about
Miele coffee machines.

Why does a fan keep running after I switch my Miele coffee system off?
Miele runs an internal fan after drinks are made, and after switch-off, until the inside of the machine has dried. It is normal and stops on its own. A fan that never stops over several hours is worth a visit.
My Miele built-in stopped halfway through a large mug of coffee. Is something broken?
Probably not. The cup-rim sensor under the central spout has to touch the rim of the container, and a very wide opening can keep it from doing so, which ends the drink. Try a narrower cup or move the mug so the sensor meets its edge.
Can my Miele built-in coffee machine sit behind a cabinet door?
No. Miele says it must not be installed behind a closed cabinet door, because heat and moisture build up there and can damage the machine and the cabinet. If yours has been fitted that way, we point it out on the visit.
Why does my Miele coffee machine grind louder than usual?
Miele names two causes: the bean container ran empty during grinding, or something hard such as a stone or a piece of plastic got in with the beans. Refill it for the first; for the second, switch the machine off at once and book a visit rather than running it again.
