This section is for the checks you can do yourself before anybody is booked, and for reading what the machine is already telling you. Every check stays on the outside of the coffee machine or behind the front door the maker expects you to open: the tank, the beans, the trays, the display, a removable brew unit and the data plate.

Coffee machine checks before booking: power, water, beans, trays and one test drink

Fifteen minutes in the order the machine checks itself, the tray rules most owners never read, the notes that shorten a visit, and the signs that end the checks at once.

Reading the coffee machine display: reminders, container prompts and numbered codes

Most messages are requests, a few are reports. Why a prompt stays with the tank full, how long each maker wants you to wait before a restart, and when a code means booking.

Where the data plate sits on a built-in coffee system, a countertop bean-to-cup machine and a manual espresso machine, which numbers on it matter, and how to read a faded one.

Checks you can make from the front.

A coffee machine talks more than most appliances. It asks for water, beans and cleaning, it counts toward descaling, and it reports numbered codes when an internal check fails. Knowing which of those messages is a request and which is a report saves both a wasted visit and a missed warning.

The guides here cover built-in coffee systems in a tall cabinet, plumbed units that fill from the house supply, countertop bean-to-cup machines and manual espresso machines. Where the makers disagree, as they do on restart times and on where the plate sits, the guide gives each one's own instruction.

Each guide also marks where to stop. A breaker that trips again, water spreading toward an outlet or into the cabinet, a burning smell and steam from the wrong place end the checks at once. Opening the housing or sliding a built-in out of its opening is never part of them.

Questions about
troubleshooting.

Which guide should I read first?
If the machine shows a message, start with the guide to the display. If it shows nothing useful, the checks before booking go through power, water, beans and trays in order.
Do I need any tools?
No. A flashlight, a dry cloth and a phone camera cover everything here. The brushes and cleaning tablets the maker supplies are the only other things you might use.
Can a restart fix a numbered code?
Often, which is why several makers ask for a timed restart first. A code that comes straight back after the wait the maker gives is the one to book for.
Why do you ask for the model and serial number?
Machines that look alike can carry different grinders, brew units and boards. The numbers from the data plate tell a technician which parts and which manual apply.
