Maintenance and prevention,
guide by guide.

Most coffee machine visits we make could have been pushed back by years with a few minutes of care: a descale answered when the display asked, a brew unit rinsed on Sunday, a milk line cleaned before the foam faded. This section covers those routines one at a time, whether the machine is built in, stands on the counter or takes a portafilter.

Descaling a Coffee Machine by Its Maker's Program, Tablets and Timing

How the machine decides a descale is due, what the Miele and JURA programs ask for, why vinegar and a stopped cycle do harm, and when a filter changes the schedule.

Caring for the Milk System: Rinse After Each Cup, Brush Daily, Clean Weekly

The rinse after every milk drink, the flask, lid and valve by hand, the maker's cleaning program, the milk that belongs in it and keeping it cold between cups.

Habits that keep it pouring for years.

The steps come from the makers' own operating instructions, not from general advice. That matters more on this appliance than most: the makers ask for their own descaling tablets, cleaning tablets and milk cleaners, set their own mixing ratios and warn that a program stopped halfway can harm the machine. Where two makers do things differently, the guides show both and point you to your own manual.

Everything here is done from the front of the machine with it cool, using the doors, trays and menus the manual describes. None of it involves opening the housing, sliding a built-in out of its cabinet or putting a hand past the brew-unit door while it is still hot. Each guide says where its own limit sits, and past that line the work is ours.

Prevention also protects the cup. Coffee residue can grow mold in a warm, damp machine, and milk left in a line spoils, so the cleaning routines are as much about hygiene as about keeping the pump and heater healthy. The water, heat and hygiene section covers what to do when something has already gone wrong.

Questions about
maintenance and prevention.

What is the most important coffee machine maintenance job?
Descaling on time with the maker's agent. Scale in the heater, valves and brew unit causes more lasting damage than any other kind of neglect, and it builds without any visible sign.
Can I use the same cleaning products on any coffee machine?
Use what your maker names. JURA and Miele both ask for their own tablets and cleaners and warn that other agents can damage the machine or leave residues.
How much time does weekly coffee machine care take?
About as long as a cleaning program runs plus a few minutes at the sink. Programs we have documented take roughly 11 to 40 minutes, and most run on their own once started.
Does a water filter replace descaling?
On some models, as long as the cartridge is changed when the machine asks. Others still ask for descaling with a filter fitted, so follow your own manual.
